El mundo del alpinismo está de luto: los escaladores austríacos David Lama, Hansjörg Auer y el estadounidense Jess Roskelly fueron dados por muertos tras haber desaparecido a causa de una avalancha en las Montañas Rocosas canadienses.
Parks Canada, el organismo público a cargo del Parque Nacional Banff, donde se encontraban los deportistas, informó a la agencia Efe que basado en la valoración de la situación, "se presume que los tres miembros del grupo han muerto". El miércoles, tras no recibir noticias de los alpinistas, considerados entre los mejores del mundo, su personal sobrevoló el área y descubrieron indicios "de múltiples avalanchas y restos de equipo de escalada".
"Extendemos nuestras más sinceras condolencias a las familias, amigos y seres queridos de los tres montañeros", indicó el organismo en un comunicado. Por otra parte, las autoridades canadienses informaron que no pueden recuperar los restos de los alpinistas por "las peligrosas condiciones en la zona". Según detallaron, en el lugar se registraron fuertes vientos y nuevas avalanchas.

En tanto, medios locales informaron que la desaparición de los tres alpinistas ocurrió tras una avalancha en Howse Peak, una montaña de 3.395 metros considerada como una de las más difíciles de las Montañas Rocosas.
El padre de Roskelley, uno de los alpinistas, señaló al diario The Spokesman Review que intentó contactarse el martes con su hijo pero no tuvo ninguna respuesta. De inmediato, el hombre se puso en contacto con las autoridades canadienses que sobrevolaron el área en helicóptero e informaron que había indicios de una avalancha y al menos un cuerpo parcialmente enterrado. "Están muertos. No están desaparecidos", aseguró.
